About this module

Working at a sporting event is a distinct skill set with its own scope, kit and decision-making. Module 11 (Elite Therapy Education) prepares you to plan for and work safely at events — recognising and responding to concussion, controlling catastrophic haemorrhage, triaging injury and making removal-from-play decisions — while staying firmly within the sports therapist's scope of practice.

Across 40 guided learning hours you will study current UK event-care guidance and apply event-specific reasoning across pitchside team sports, motorsport and endurance, combat-sport cornerwork and mass-participation events, including heat illness and exercise-associated hyponatraemia.

What you'll learn

Across the 40 guided learning hours this module covers:

• The sports therapist's scope at an event, and how it differs from a paramedic's or doctor's
• Event planning — recce, kit bag, communication plan, multi-disciplinary integration and risk assessment (RFU PHICIS, FA, UK grassroots concussion guidance)
• Recognising and managing suspected concussion (2023 Amsterdam Consensus, SCAT6 / CRT6, World Rugby HIA)
• Control of catastrophic haemorrhage, spinal precaution, wound care and soft-tissue / joint-injury triage
• Removal-from-play decision-making across four event environments
• Heat illness and exercise-associated hyponatraemia — recognition and on-the-day triage
• A structured post-event debrief and reflective model (Gibbs; Driscoll)

Aims & objectives

On successful completion of this module learners will be able to:

• Define and apply the scope of practice for a UK sports therapist at an event.
• Plan and prepare for an event in line with current UK guidance.
• Recognise and respond to a suspected concussion and know the removal-from-play pathway.
• Apply pre-hospital principles — haemorrhage control, spinal precaution, wound care and triage.
• Apply event-specific reasoning across at least four event environments.
• Recognise heat illness and exercise-associated hyponatraemia and triage correctly.
• Reflect on event practice and acknowledge the limits of scope.

This module is assessed by the Event-Therapy MCQ (40 questions; pass mark 80%; unlimited retakes) and a reflective essay, with applied competence evidenced through the 200-hour reflective portfolio.

What it covers	Scope, event planning, concussion, haemorrhage control, triage, and environment-specific care. Many items have a clinical floor where a wrong answer is a hazardous on-the-day decision

Grading

Assessed work is marked against University-style criteria — 1st-class, 2:1, 2:2 and 3rd (or, where noted, pass/fail against a published threshold). Markschemes set out exactly what each band looks like and are available on the MTE Thinkific Portal. Learners are expected to self-check their work against the descriptors before submission.

Plagiarism & late submission

All assessments must be the learner's own work and, where written, fully Harvard-referenced using Cite This For Me or equivalent. Failure to reference, or copying from another source, will result in a fail for that piece of work and the MTE plagiarism policy (see the course handbook) will apply. Late submissions are capped at a 3rd-class mark.

Guided learning hours (40 hours)

This module is delivered fully online via the MTE Thinkific Portal — there is no face-to-face day. The 40 guided learning hours combine recorded lessons, the Event-Therapy MCQ, the reflective essay and reflective practice.
